February President's Message

The Winter Olympics are here and it appears that Vancouver has a slight problem – lack of snow. I saw on the news how they are bringing in snow via helicopter so that they can hold the snowboarding events. I wonder if the east coast is trying to figure out a way to transport their excess snow to Vancouver. They could consider it a “goodwill” gesture – but I guess it would either melt on the way, or cost more to transport it than just manufacturing it locally. What would be ironic is if a major snow storm hits Vancouver right after the closing ceremonies. But, remember, life just is like that sometimes. We can have the best plans and intentions but things outside our control can change it in a heartbeat. I was planning to get an early jump start on tax season last weekend; however, both my computer and I came down with a virus. My computer was scrubbed clean by my IT consultant and was back up and running after only a couple of days. I am taking much longer to recover – I guess we have not invented a reformat program for humans. I tried to understand how my computer could have received a virus in the first place. I have firewalls, virus software, and spam filters that slow down the processing speed of my computer all under the “assurance” that no virus will be allowed to pass through. Alas, the virus found a way into my system. My computer continually asks my permission to run everyday programs – you would think it would want my permission to download a virus.

Fortunately, our topic this month will provide us all with some confirmation that we must remain vigilant with our security systems. Please join us on Tuesday, February 23, 2010 as we hear from Euguene Schultz, Chief Technology Officer at Emagined Security, on his presentation of “The Economics and Value of IT Security”. Please consider inviting a guest to this informative event. Hopefully my personal virus will be “scrubbed clean” by then.
